Israel kills Hamas gunman, Gaza salvo hits Israeli city

GAZA (Reuters) - Israel killed a Hamas gunman it accused of preparing to fire a rocket from the Gaza Strip on Sunday and a separate Palestinian salvo struck a southern Israeli city, causing no damage.

The incidents followed a three-day lull since an upsurge in violence last week in which Israel killed at least four Gaza militants as dozens of rockets were fired at Israeli towns, damaging some homes and wounding several agricultural workers.

An Israeli air strike before dawn on Sunday struck two gunmen from the Palestinian enclave's governing Hamas movement as they rode a motorcycle near the central town of Khan Younis, local officials said. One man was killed and the other wounded.

An Israeli military spokesman said the air force had targeted a squad preparing to fire a rocket into Israel.

Hamas said its gunmen had fired mortar rounds at Israeli ground forces who had penetrated the coastal territory nearby. The military said those soldiers, who were unhurt, had been carrying out "routine work along the boundary fence".

Separately, two Palestinian rockets fired from Gaza struck Beersheba, a city 40 km (25 miles) away, causing no damage, the military spokesman said. Beersheba sounded air raid sirens and shuttered its schools as a precaution against further attacks.

The Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), one of several smaller Palestinian factions in Gaza that often operate independently of Hamas, said it had launched one of the Beersheba rockets. There was no immediate claim for the second.

Though Islamist Hamas is hostile to the Jewish state, it has recently sought to avoid cross-border confrontations as it tries to shore up its rule of Gaza in the face of more radical challengers and to build relations with potential allies abroad.

Israel's policy is to hold Hamas responsible for any attack emanating from Gaza.

Innovation Excellence | Data Science for Business Leaders

Data Science for Business LeadersEarlier this year I participated in a 5-day?Data Science and Big Data Analytics course. I was hoping that by the end of the week I would have a greater sense of how to grow the skill sets that would turn me into a more effective data scientist.

An interesting thing happened on day 1 of the course: I became distracted. The instructor (David Dietrich) put up a chart depicting the Data Science Lifecycle (shown below), and I was drawn so much into the diagram that I realized that the role of data scientist was not for me:

Data Science for Business Leaders

I attended the course because I knew that Data Science would become intrinsically linked to my role as Director of Global Innovation at EMC. The course has been wildly popular inside the company (1200 employees have taken the course). Hundreds of EMC partners and customers have also signed up, and the curriculum is now available at various universities. Over 100 faculty have ordered the readiness training from 20+ countries so far.

For my own data science project, I was collecting innovation data from EMC?s R&D locations around the world. I had structured data. I had unstructured data. But I lacked the general knowledge of which analytical techniques would provide me the best insight into EMC?s innovation ecosystem. Would it be clustering? Or would regression make the most sense?

Eventually I was taught the basics of clustering and regression algorithms, and I was also taught the circumstances in which these algorithms were most commonly used. Clearly these techniques would assist me in my quest to gain innovation insight.

However, the Lifecycle chart informed me that traditional data science projects have many moving parts and a variety of important roles; the Data Scientist alone could never provide the insight that I am looking for.

In fact, the course defined my role as a Project Sponsor, which is quite distinct from a Data Scientist. Here are the definitions for both:

  • Project Sponsor: Responsible for the genesis of the project, providing the impetus for the project and core business problem, generally provides the funding and will gauge the degree of value from the final outputs of the working team.
  • Data Scientist: Provide subject matter expertise for analytical techniques, data modeling, applying valid analytical techniques to given business problems and ensuring overall analytical objectives are met.

Indeed, as the months moved forward and I began implementing the six phases of the Analytic Lifecycle, I found myself building a team that not only contained data scientists, but various other roles as well:

  • Data Engineers: deep technical skills to assist with tuning SQL queries for data management, extraction, and support data ingest to analytic sandbox (this included IT personnel on the East Coast ?and EMC Labs researchers in China).
  • Database Administrators: Provisions and configures database environment to support the analytical needs of the working team (my co-workers at the CTO Office Lab in Santa Clara).
  • Business User: Someone who benefits from the end results and can consult and advise project team on value of end results and how these will be operationalized (the CTO of EMC, who runs the Innovation programs).

The fact that I was drawn into the ?business end? of building a data science team for innovation is actually consistent with industry trends. ?While it is estimated (in the United States) that employers will be short some 140,000-190,000 data scientists in the years to come, there will be an even bigger gap of some 1.5 million ?data savvy professionals?. These professionals need to know how to build teams, engage with executives, and guide the data scientists, engineers, DBAs, and business intelligence analysts.

In hindsight, I would have valued a dedicated course on the topic of managing data science projects.

Fortunately, I am in luck: within the next several months EMC Education Services will release a new course on this very topic. The course will be geared to teaching data science to business leaders. I will attend a pre-release version of the course and will be sure to share my thoughts in advance of the official release.

Millions of years of healthy life lost to cancer in 2008; Alcohol may be more damaging to lifespan than smoking; Multivitamins cut cancer risk in men by 8%

(October 20, 2012 - Insidermedicine Week in Review)

From France - A new report published in the Lancet estimates that over 160 million years of healthy life were lost to cancer in 2008. Researchers studied cancer registries worldwide, using disability-adjusted life years to calculate the amount of healthy lives lost due to both fatal and non-fatal cancers. They found that 169.3 million years were lost, with lung, breast, colorectal and prostate cancers accounting for 18-50% of the cancer burden

From Germany - Alcohol dependence may shorten lifespan more than smoking, according to a? report published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research. Researchers studied over 4,000 adults for 14 years, 149 of whom were alcohol dependent. Results showed that mean age at death for females dependent on alcohol was 60 and 58 for males, both of which are 20 years earlier than the general population.

From Boston - A new report presented at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) annual meeting finds that daily multivitamins may lower risk of cancer in men. Researchers randomized over 15,000 men to take daily multivitamins or placebo for more than 10 years, and found that those taking the vitamins had a 8% reduction in cancer rates as well as a reduction in cancer deaths

Historic building at University of Alabama could be moved

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? One of the oldest buildings on the University of Alabama campus may be moved to make way for a new dining hall.

The Tuscaloosa News reports that university officials are in talks with a buyer for the Kilgore House, a Queen Anne-style home built for Bryce Hospital's first engineer in 1890.

Historic preservation groups want the university to leave the house where it is.

University spokeswoman Cathy Andreen said she could not discuss the potential buyer. But she said current plans call for moving the building.

The director of the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation, David Schneider, said the best outcome would be to leave the building where it is. He said the worst-case scenario would be demolition. He said moving a building can be expensive and difficult.

Online Marketing - How Are You Going to Market Your ... - Web Adept

    ?

online marketing strategySo, you?ve decided to build a new website for your business. You know how you want it to look, you?ve written the text for each page and found a web design company to make it all happen. Job done!

    ?

    Well? not quite.

    ?

    A Needle in A Haystack

    ?

There are currently 644 million websites on the internet (March, 2012). That means the chances of your customers finding your website by chance are negligible (at best). If your shiny new website is going to be seen by anyone, you need to do some marketing.

    ?

    ?Online Marketing

    ?

When it comes to marketing you should view your website as if it was a business card or company brochure. You could spend lots of time and money getting the information and design exactly right, but it?s not going to deliver any business until you put it in the right hands. That?s the tricky part.

    ?

Firstly, in order for a website to attract targeted visitors and convert those visitors into loyal customers, you need to build your website with this marketing in mind. This means integrating elements of social media into your website, building it in a way that allows the search engines to index each page quickly and easily and building in elements of dynamic content ? such as a blog. These things need to be considered right from the word ?go?.

    ?

Secondly, the moment when your website goes live is only the beginning. It?s what you do after that which will govern the success or failure of your website. Successful online marketing requires using a range of channels on a regular basis to target and attract visitors to your website. Some of these channels might deliver short term results and others might invest in the long term value of your website.

    ?

The marketing of your website can be roughly divided into three key elements:

    ?

Search Marketing ? Visibility in the search engine results is crucial if you hope to get targeted visitors to visit your website. By optimising the pages on your website for your most valuable keywords, and by building the overall authority of your site, you can gradually climb the search engine results, increase traffic and generate revenue.

    ?

Social Media ? The social web is a relatively new development. This allows you to connect and converse with a community of followers using a variety of online channels. This can be a very valuable way to build a community, develop relationships and generate traffic.

    ?

Content Marketing ? Both search marketing and social media rely on content. If you are going to attract targeted visitors to your website and successfully convert them into customers, you need to produce high quality content for your visitors. There are many ways to do this but the most effective is to start a blog on your website.

    ?

We don?t pretend that online marketing is easy. To do it well you need to have time, resources and expertise. However, unless you do it, your website will always be a needle in a haystack and deliver almost no value.

    ?

We understand that most companies don?t have the time, resources or expertise to run their own online marketing campaign. That?s why we offer a fully managed online marketing service to help our customers get the greatest possible value from their websites.

    ?

Interested? Why not give us a call?

Thefts of cell phones rise rapidly nationwide - Idaho Statesman

? In this tech-savvy city teeming with commuters and tourists, the cell phone has become a top target of robbers who use stealth, force and sometimes guns.

Nearly half of all robberies in San Francisco this year are cell phone-related, police say, and most occur on bustling transit lines.

One thief recently snatched a smartphone while sitting right behind his unsuspecting victim and darted out the rear of a bus in mere seconds.

Another robber grabbed an iPhone from an oblivious bus rider - while she was still talking.

And, in nearby Oakland, City Council candidate Dan Kalb was robbed at gunpoint of his iPhone Wednesday after he attended a neighborhood anti-crime meeting.

"I thought he was going to shoot me," recalled Kalb, who had dropped his phone during the stickup. "He kept saying, 'Find the phone! Find the phone!'"

These brazen incidents are part of a ubiquitous crime wave striking coast to coast. New York City Police report that more than 40 percent of all robberies now involve cell phones. And cell phone thefts in Los Angeles, which account for more than a quarter of all the city's robberies, are up 27 percent from this time a year ago, police said.

"This is your modern-day purse snatching," said longtime San Francisco Police Capt. Joe Garrity, who began noticing the trend here about two years ago. "A lot of younger folks seem to put their entire lives on these things that don't come cheap."

Thefts of cell phones- particularly the expensive do-it-all smartphones containing everything from photos and music to private e-mails and bank account statements- are costing consumers millions of dollars and sending law enforcement agencies and wireless carriers nationwide scrambling for solutions.

In San Francisco, police have gone undercover and launched a transit ad campaign, warning folks to "be smart with your smartphone." Similar warnings went out in Oakland, where there have been nearly 1,300 cell phone robberies this year.

When Apple's ballyhooed iPhone 5 went on sale last month, New York City police encouraged buyers to register their phone's serial numbers with the department. That came just months after a 26-year-old chef at the Museum of Modern Art was killed for his iPhone while heading home to the Bronx.

In St. Louis, city leaders proposed an ambitious ordinance requiring anyone who resells cell phones to obtain a secondhand dealers license. Resellers also would need to record the phone's identity number and collect detailed information including the seller's names, addresses, a copy of their driver's licenses - even their thumbprints.

"It will take a national solution to make this problem go away," St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay said of the phone thefts.

Though some experts put annual cell phone losses in the billions of dollars, there is no precise figure on how many devices are stolen each year.

However, the problem has become so visible that it has caught the attention of lawmakers and regulators seeking to take the profit out of cell phone theft.

In April, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-New York, and New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly announced that the major U.S. cell phone carriers and the Federal Communications Commission have agreed to set up a national database to track reported stolen phones. It is scheduled to launch in late 2013.

Schumer also introduced a bill called the Mobile Device Theft Deterrence Act, which proposes a five-year prison sentence for tampering with the ID numbers of a stolen cell phone. The bill is supported by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), a Washington, D.C. advocacy group.

In addition, CTIA officials said carriers are expected to launch individual databases later this month to permanently disable a cell phone reported stolen. The initiative is similar to a successful decade-old strategy in Australia.

Previously, U.S. carriers have only been able to disable so-called SIM cards, which can be swapped in and out of phones. That's led to a profitable black market for stolen phones.

Chris Guttman-McCabe, CTIA's vice president of regulatory affairs, said the goal of creating theft databases is to render stolen cell phones worthless.

"We want to dry up the aftermarket," Guttman-McCabe said. "Hopefully, there will be no sense in stealing a phone and a once valuable piece of hardware will essentially turn into useless metal."

Right now, the incentive is to steal and that's creating huge losses, said Kevin Mahaffey, a co-founder of Lookout, a San Francisco-based mobile security firm which has advised carriers about the national database.

"Thieves know that carrying a smartphone is like carrying $500 in your hands," said Mahaffey. His company estimates that stolen and lost cell phones could cost American consumers more than $30 billion this year.

Many cities with highest rates of stolen and lost phones also rank among the FBI's listing of U.S. cities with the highest crime rates, including Cleveland, Detroit, Oakland and Newark, N.J., Mahaffey said.

Meanwhile, cell phone thefts and police response continue at a frenzied pace.

In Chicago, two men were each charged with armed robbery last week after stealing an iPhone from a teen.

In Oakland, nearly three dozen people were recently arrested during a sweep for allegedly stealing smartphones. On Tuesday, police arrested 15-year-old boy who allegedly swiped a woman's iPhone near Oakland's City Hall and sold it in downtown San Francisco for $200 to buy marijuana.

"It's a quick crime of opportunity, a snatch and grab, either by foot or on bike," Officer Johnna Watson, an Oakland police spokeswoman, said. "The thieves are gone in an instant."

    Dealership Group Sues Tesla

    Tesla

    ?

From rockets to passenger cars, Tesla is a company that loves playing by their own rules.

    ?

So it should be no surprise that Elon Musk's vision for direct sales (as opposed to franchise dealerships) is rubbing certain folks the wrong way. You see, Tesla is so intent on mimicking Apple's retail sales model that the Palo Alto, CA-based automaker hired George Blankenship, who once pioneered the Apple Store concept, to manage Tesla stores selling their automotive offerings.

    ?

Rather than following the traditional dealership model which offers price negotiation, Tesla's 17 stores offer fixed pricing and are owned by Tesla, not independently operated-- which, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association, violates laws in 48 states stipulating that dealers can't be factory owned. A dealer in Massachusetts is claiming that Tesla is operating "under the guise of a nonsales showroom, and we call that out as an outright scam." Another dealer in New York says that franchised dealers can't compete with manufacturer-owned businesses because they can't spend as much on facilities or advertising.

    ?

Will the critics prevail, or will Tesla continue to move cars through company-owned showrooms? Given Mr. Musk's tenacity and tendency for forward thinking business decisions, this promises to be a serious fight.

Choosing a Career? Identify a Problem You Can Fix! | Business 2 ...

When Choosing a Career, make sure you are basing your decision on your own strengths, interests, goals, aspirations, skills and personal tastes and be aware of the tendency to be influenced by your siblings and their choices. Many people choose a career path because they are familiar with the field as a result of having family members working in that field. We all know people who chose to go into their profession or trade by what I call ?career default?. In the comedy film, My Cousin Vinny, Merisa Tomei (as Lisa) explains the history of mechanics in her family when the prosecutor asks her how she is so knowledgeable of cars:? My father was a mechanic. His father was a mechanic; my mother?s father was a mechanic. My three brothers are mechanics, four uncles on my father?s side are mechanics.?

    Career default

While it?s true that one may become more knowledgeable about an area if it?s frequently discussed at home, there is no guarantee that having this exposure and being familiar with a profession makes it the right choice for your career. I could not find any studies that prove people are happier who have entered a field because they have family members in that area. In fact, there is more information available that may present the opposite view, identifying low self-esteem and regrets for entering a family business.

I have a close friend who went into Medicine strictly based on the fact that her father, brother and every other person their mother respected was a Doctor. My friend?s ?career default? choice is not as unusual as one would think. She, like many others who fell into their careers, often questions whether her life would have been easier or more fulfilling had she chosen a different area such as business for a profession. Sadly, she?ll never know the answer to this question as she settled into her life as a Physician and now in midlife it?s too late to start over. The investment she?s made both in time and money to pursuing an M.D. and to her residency and to raising a family makes it extremely difficult to reinvent herself now and explore other options. Her skills and training are highly specialized and would not transfer easily to the business world.

In another situation, I observed the youngest child in a large family settle for entering the family business as that?s all that was talked about during his formative years and that was the obvious and best choice for his other siblings who were not academically inclined. It so happens that the older siblings opted to join the family business because they had no other great options. They were not particularly successful students and they had neither burning interests nor connections that would lead them to another industry. The youngest, son who was my client, had both the social acumen and the academic ability to open doors for himself in many areas. Unfortunately, he developed some bad habits in school and lowered his academic performance to match that of his siblings? because he wasn?t encouraged to maximize his own potential and grow beyond his brothers and sisters.

Identify the problem and how you can fix it

Too often we settle for a career or pursue a field based on what was right for our siblings or our peers and not what?s right for ourselves because of either parental pressure or our own blocks that prevent us from seeing ourselves as individuals with both the opportunity, challenge and responsibility for finding our own unique calling. I suggest that if you find yourself in this trap of identifying too closely with your siblings and their strengths, skills or their limitations that you change your thinking now. Start thinking today about what makes you different from your siblings and how you can develop your strengths so you can find a suitable career and a path that meets your desires, interests, personal tastes and skills.

Many people identify with family members as we see ourselves most closely linked to them by name and by life experience. But, when it comes to choosing a career, each person in a family should recognize his own abilities and skills that may vary even if with identical twins. Whether you have a sibling who is a superstar or one who is learning disabled, never assume that you are limited or confined by your siblings? choices as their reasons for choosing a given career don?t necessarily apply to you when charting the course for your future.

We all have choices but often we don?t consider them as we fall into the more predictable and comfortable path of being what I call a ?career follower.? We look to our parents, siblings, aunts? uncles and possibly our neighbors and end our career search there. I almost went to law school because both my brothers and my fathers were lawyers and that was the profession I was most familiar with. The default career path for me as a lawyer would have led me to a path that would have made it difficult to stay home and raise my two children and impossible for me to fulfill my life dream to help others catapult their life dreams.

One can learn from my situation that what at the time was a disappointment (not having scores that would get me into Harvard, Yale or Stanford) ended up being a huge blessing! If I had followed the path of my siblings and my father of going to law school, I would have unknowingly forgone the opportunity to develop my marketing and other entrepreneurial skills that I gained by pursuing an MBA and working as a computer sales rep, marketing consultant, legal recruiter, H.R. executive intern and strategic planner and finally as an author and career coach. All of the skills I gleaned over the years prepared me for the career I have today which ultimately is my calling! I didn?t know that these steps would have resulted in me choosing to become a career coach: In fact this field wasn?t even in demand earlier in my career. The lesson one can glean from my story is that you can?t always know what career will be most suitable for you at the beginning of your career path. Also, be true to yourself, seek out your own identity and don?t let others define you. Your true calling can?t be revealed if you follow someone else?s path without introspecting if that path is one that matches your skills, interests, gifts, values and personal goals.

TV reporter keeps cool as roach crawls on him

    By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Reporters often find themselves battling elements in the midst of live shots but those elements tend to be more of the weather variety. For NBC LA's Robert Kovacik, no hurricane or wildfire conditions were necessary for a truly unnerving piece of footage.

While appearing on Thursday's 11 p.m. news, a sizable roach also made a television appearance and proceeded to crawl ALL OVER Kovacik. Take a look at the video as the vermin makes tracks up his arm and across his shoulders; like the pro he his, Kovacik doesn't even bat an eye.

He tweeted afterward: "Thanks viewers for noticing the 'guest' in our live shot! Any names for my new pet?"

If Kovacik's name sounds familiar for reasons outside his reporting, your memory is sharp. Kovacik was dining at the Beverly Hills Hotel's Polo Lounge just before Christmas in 2010 with "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Lisa Vanderpump when an "extremely drunk" man approached their table. The man reportedly began to ask harassing questions of Vanderpump, such as, "What are you doing with old people?" When Kovacik attempted to get the man to stop, the man responded by punching Kovacik in the face and shoving Vanderpump's husband, who was dining with them, to the ground.

Libyan Islamist denies role in Benghazi attack

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? A Libyan Islamist militia commander who a witness and officials say helped lead the deadly assault on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi said on Thursday that he was at the building that night, but denied he was involved in the attack.

Ahmed Abu Khattala, who describes himself as a founder and commander of the Islamist militia Abu Obaida Bin Jarrah, told The Associated Press by telephone that he went to the consulate in the eastern Libyan city on Sept. 11 to rescue men that he had been informed were trapped inside.

Abu Khattala said that, despite reports of his involvement, he had not been questioned by Libyan authorities and was not in hiding, and that he was going about his daily business as a construction contractor in Benghazi.

U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans died in the attack. It has become an issue in the U.S. election season, with Republicans accusing the Obama administration of being slow to label the assault an act of terrorism early on, and slow to strike back at those responsible.

U.S. officials' accounts of the night include assailants storming the compound and setting its buildings aflame, American security agents taking fire across more than a mile (kilometer) of the city, the ambassador and three employees killed and others forced into a daring car escape against traffic.

A Libyan witness interviewed in the aftermath of the attack by the AP said that Abu Khattala was present directing fighters. The witness spoke anonymously for fear of retaliation.

An AP reporter was also shown a camera photo of a long-haired, long-bearded man who was wearing the Afghan-style robe favored by many radicals and whom other Benghazi residents identified as the 41-year-old militia leader. The consulate's gate with barbed wire could be seen in the background.

The New York Times has quoted unnamed Libyan officials as singling out Abu Khattala as a commander in the attack, calling him a leader in the hardline Islamist Ansar al-Shariah militia. Other Libyan witnesses say they saw Ansar al-Shariah trucks mounted with heavy weapons outside the consulate the night of the attack.

The overlap between Abu Obaida Bin Jarrah and Ansar al-Shariah is not clear. Libya's rebel council moved to disband Abu Obaida Bin Jarrah after the July 2011 assassination of rebel army chief Abdel Fattah Younis, a killing blamed on the Islamist group. Some militiamen say Abu Obaida Bin Jarrah fighters joined Ansar al-Shariah, which rose to prominence during fighting later in the war and was entrusted with security in post-war Benghazi.

In Abu Khattala's account of the night, he was informed by phone that there was a protest at the building and that four men were trapped inside. He and his men went there to rescue them.

Abu Khattala declined to explain further how and why he was called upon to go to the site. Libya's government lacks a strong army and police force and has relied on militias, including in the past Ansar al-Shariah, to keep order.

"It was crowded inside, people were carrying stuff and leaving," he said. He said he saw smoke but no fire.

"It was the first time I learned that there was a U.S. consulate in this place," Abu Khattala said. "And I never learned about, met, or had any relation with the U.S. ambassador."

Abu Khattala said he has not been questioned by Libyan authorities. "All this talk is baseless," he said by telephone. "I am in Benghazi, have a job and live my life normally. I have not been accused by any party with any allegations ... I am not a fugitive or in hiding."

Abu Khattala says he is originally from the western city of Misrata, but other media reports have said he was from Benghazi. He said he was imprisoned four to five times between 1996 and 2010, a time when dictator Moammar Gadhafi staged various crackdowns on Islamist groups.

During the war against Gadhafi, he fought alongside revolutionary fighters in the Benghazi front and helped form Abu Obaida bin Jarrah.

After the fall of Gadhafi, the local authorities asked his militia to guard state property including a hospital called al-Hawarhi but after a while he and his forces withdrew after seeing corruption and "actions that are against Islamic Shariah law," he said.

In an earlier interview with the AP in March, he said that "Libyan society has diverted from principles of Islam ... and Shariah should be implemented in courts," and articulated several hardline Islamist beliefs.

He defended a spate of demolitions by Islamist puritans of shrines used by more traditionalist Muslims, saying the destruction was "lawful in Islam."

While denying links to al-Qaida, he described Osama bin Laden as "a good brother who fought for a cause and died defending his belief and the outcome is not important."

He denied any role in the Younis assassination.

Elsewhere in the country, pro-government Libyan militiamen traded fire with fighters defending a former Gadhafi stronghold on Thursday as families fled for their lives, medical officials and militia members said.

Officials said that at least six people died and 80 were wounded on Wednesday, the first day of renewed fighting at Bani Walid, some 140 kilometers (90 miles) southeast of Tripoli. They spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution. They had no figures for casualties from Thursday's clashes.

Violence has flared periodically over the last year at Bani Walid, the most significant town in Libya that continues to resist the control of the rebels who overthrew Gadhafi in October 2011 and subsequently formed the country's new government.

Fighters of the pro-government Libya Shield militia had besieged the town for several weeks, blaming residents for the death of a well-known anti-Gadhafi rebel. On Wednesday, saying that negotiations to hand over the suspects in the killing had failed, they launched a mortar and artillery barrage and a ground assault.

Libya's military says negotiations continue amid the fighting. Chief of Staff Gen. Youssef Mangoush told reporters in Tripoli that his forces will enter the town "after reaching a consensus among all parties" but warned that if his forces came under fire, "they have the right of self-defense."

"The people of Bani Walid will welcome our force because it represents the state," he added. The Defense Ministry meanwhile urged residents to hand over fighters who allegedly taking part in killings during and after the war.

Meanwhile, dozens of pick-up trucks mounted with heavy weapons headed out of Tripoli toward Bani Walid to reinforce the siege.

Bani Walid has changed hands twice in the last year. Rebels captured it last October at the end of the eight month civil war, but fighters loyal to the dictator shortly afterward rose up and expelled them, along with pro-rebel residents. There was an uneasy standoff that ended when Omran Shaaban, a rebel hailed as the fighter who caught Gadhafi, was reportedly kidnapped and killed by Bani Walid residents.

Bani Walid residents contacted by phone say they fear looting if the town falls again.

Libya is still building a national army and transitional authorities depended heavily on ex-rebel forces such as Libya Shield to secure the country.

The Benghazi attack has fueled an anti-militia backlash. The government says that it is outlawing particularly troublesome militias and appointing commanders to posts to rein in others. But many Libyans are skeptical that the fighters will accept central government authority.
