(AP) ? Sam Stosur waited 2? hours to play because of rain, then quickly won her opening match at the French Open.

The 2010 runner-up swept the first nine games Tuesday and drubbed 42-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-0, 6-2.

Matches were delayed at the start on a 55-degree afternoon. And when the rain stopped, Stosur was ready. Playing on cozy Court 1, nicknamed the bullring, Stosur dominated with her strong serve and pinpoint groundstrokes, repeatedly skipping shots just inside the lines.

Shortly after Stosur finished, rain returned, prompting another interruption.

"I was happy to get out there and start," she said. "It was spitting a little bit when we went out there. You think, 'Oh, are we going to start or are we not?' Lucky for me I was able to finish the match before this last downpour came."

Australian Bernard Tomic, whose father was barred from Roland Garros after being charged recently with assaulting his son's hitting partner, retired trailing Victor Hanescu 7-5, 7-6 (8), 2-1. Tomic was treated for a right hamstring injury after three games and limped at times during the match.

American Jack Sock, a 20-year-old qualifier ranked 118th, made a successful Roland Garros debut by beating Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2, 6-2, 7-5. Sock wore initials on his shoes in honor of two friends who died recently in separate car crashes.

"Kind of hits you out of nowhere," he said. "I was definitely thinking of them out there."

No. 12 Tommy Haas earned his first Grand Slam victory since turning 35, beating Guillaume Rufin 7-6 (4), 6-1, 6-3. Youth was also served ? Lucas Pouille, a 19-year-old wild card from France, defeated American Alex Kuznetsov 6-1, 7-6 (2), 6-2.

No. 26 Grigor Dimitrov advanced when Alejandro Falla retired with indigestion trailing 6-4, 1-0.

France's Marion Bartoli, a semifinalist two years ago, needed more than three hours on center court to beat Olga Govortsova 7-6 (8), 4-6, 7-5.

Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka's match against Elena Vesnina was among 10 first-round matches postponed. They won't begin until at least Wednesday, three days after some players were already into the second round.

Taking the court for an evening match was No. 1-ranked Novak Djokovic, who seeks to complete a career Grand Slam with a title at Roland Garros.

Stosur, seeded No. 9, enjoyed a career breakthrough three years ago when she reached the Roland Garros final before losing to Francesca Schiavone. She won the U.S. Open in 2011, but this year has been hampered by a right calf injury and has yet to reach a semifinal.

Stosur said she's now feeling 100 percent and hoping for a good run in Paris.

"The first hurdle is done, but there are many, many more ahead of me," she said. "I have to stay on track, but I think this was a very good start."

Date-Krumm, who won the Strasbourg doubles title last week, is the third-oldest woman to play in the French Open. When she made her Roland Garros debut in 1989, nearly half the players in this year's women's draw had not yet been born.

She said she didn't play any singles matches on clay leading to Roland Garros because the surface is her weakest, and while she had low expectations against Stosur, she felt she played better toward the finish.

"I enjoy it a little bit in the end of the second set," she said. "My tennis, it was not so bad. Stosur is so strong, and she's specialist on the clay. ... I'm already focused on the grass-court season."

When rain returned after 90 minutes of play, soggy fans huddled in corridors and formed long lines at the gourmet coffee, hot dog and waffle stands.

Last week, tournament officials said they would proceed with plans to build a retractable roof over center court despite a judicial ruling in March that put the project on hold. The roof would be completed in 2018 as part of a $440 million renovation at Roland Garros.

The men's final last year between Djokovic and Rafael Nadal was halted because of rain in the fourth set, forcing an overnight suspension and the completion of the tournament on a Monday. It was the first time in 39 years the French Open didn't finish on time.

Drift Innovation HD Ghost

Action cameras come in all shapes and sizes, but all feature the same basic fixed wide-angle lens. That's where the Drift Innovation HD Ghost ($399 direct) differentiates itself from the pack, with a unique rotating lens element that allows you to adjust the angle of your shot to compensate for unleveled mounting. The HD Ghost?also has a built-in LCD that lets you frame and review shots without any added accessories like you need on competitors like the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition. While video quality is good, with crisp details and accurate exposure, the HD Ghost tops out at 1080p30?the Hero3 can shoot 1080p60 and even 4K at 15 frames per second. The HD Ghost is a fine action camera, but for the money, you get better video performance with the Hero3.

Design and Features
The HD Ghost shares a similar barrel-like design with the Sony Action Cam, but is much bulkier at 2.0 by 1.3 by 4.1 inches (HWD) and 5.9 ounces?more than double the weight of the 2-ounce Action Cam and 2.6-ounce Hero3. Along the top edge are Menu, Forward, Back, and Record buttons, which we found difficult to press. On the right side is a 2-inch color LCD, an upgrade from the monochrome LCDs used on the Action Cam and Hero3, which lets you change settings and frame shots right on the camera without any added accessories. To do this on the Action Cam you'd have to link the camera to a smartphone, and the Hero3 requires an additional LCD BacPac that costs $79.99. A door on the back houses the battery and microSD card slot, while the front features the rotating lens element. You can twist the lens a full 360 degrees in either direction, helping to level a shot once the camera is mounted?definitely a useful feature. Also on top is a multicolored LED, which indicates the recording state. ?

A wireless remote is also included with the HD Ghost, and can be worn around your wrist using the included strap. There are two buttons, Record and Stop, and multicolored LEDs that indicate recording state. It's a nice inclusion, as you can confirm recording status without having to look at the camera itself.

The HD Ghost is waterproof to 9 feet without any additional housing. Drift includes curved and flat adhesive mounts, as well as a goggle mount, but you'll have to buy an optional waterproof housing ($50 list) if you plan on going deeper than 9 feet. Like the Sony, Drift offers optional handlebar, helmet, and suction cup mounts, but still falls a bit short on mounting options when compared with GoPro.

Built-in Wi-Fi allows you to connect a smartphone or tablet to the HD Ghost using the free iOS or Android app. From there you can use your device as a viewfinder, trigger recording, or upload shots to the Web. Battery life was better than the GoPro with Wi-Fi enabled, but couldn't match the Action Cam's longevity.

Video Quality and Conclusions
The Drift HD Ghost can shoot video at 1080p30, 720p60, 720p30, and 480p120 resolutions and frame rates. It can't, however, shoot 1080p60 like the Sony Action Cam or GoPro Hero3 Black Edition. ?

For testing, we sent the Hero3, Sony Action Cam, and Drift HD Ghost out with our photographer on his most recent ski trip. Although the HD Ghost tops out at 1080p30, it outperformed the Action Cam when it came to detail. The HD Ghost's footage looked crisp, with a lot of fine details retained, like tree branches and snow texture, which appear smudged and waxy on the Action Cam. When it comes to action cameras, however, frame rates can be equally important as resolution and detail. Fast moving action isn't quite as smooth as the 1080p60 footage on the Hero3 or Action Cam. Video detail overall couldn't match the Hero3 either, though it came a good deal closer than the Action Cam.

A unique feature to the HD Ghost is what Drift calls Flashback Video mode. In this setting, the HD Ghost continually captures video, saving up to five minutes before starting the loop over again. It's a neat feature that can help ensure you never miss a shot.

Still image quality is on par with the Hero3, which is to say good, but not great. The HD Ghost shoots images at 11-, 8-, or 5-megapixels. You're still dealing with a good deal of distortion introduced by the wide angle lens, but images look sharp and colors really pop. I noticed the HD Ghost had the tendency to blow-out highlighted areas, but otherwise the images looked crisp and generally noise free.

There's a lot to like from the Drift Innovation HD Ghost?it shoots great-looking video, has a built-in LCD and built-in Wi-Fi, includes a wireless remote, and is waterproof without an extra housing. Unfortunately, at this price point, it just can't compete with the GoPro Hero3 Black Edition when it comes to pure video performance. The Hero3, and even the far less expensive Sony Action Cam, can shoot 1080p60 video, which is pretty important in the fast-paced world of action cameras. The HD Ghost is a nice option, but if you're going to spend $400, I'd recommend the Hero3 Black Edition.

Light-beam 'twins' take data farther

An idea similar to that of noise-cancelling headphones has proved useful in increasing the data-carrying properties of light.

Researchers reporting in Nature Photonics suggest putting not one beam of light down a fibre, but a pair, each a kind of mirror image of the other.

When recombined on the receiving end, the noise that the signals gather in the fibre cancels out.

These paired beams can travel four times farther than a single one.

The team used the technique to send a signal of 400Gb/s - four times faster than the best commercially available speeds - down 12,800km of optical fibre, farther than even the longest trans-oceanic fibre link.

What limits the distance a given light signal can go is how much power is in the beam. But the higher the power, the more the light actually interacts with the material of the fibre, rather than merely passing through it.

That adds "noise" to the beam that limits the fidelity with which data can be transmitted.

What is needed is a way to undo this noise, and one idea is known as phase conjugation.

Conjugate visit

Light waves, just as sound waves and waves on the sea, consist of a pattern of peaks and troughs that can be manipulated to represent data. The "phase conjugate" of a beam is, in a sense, simply one in which every peak becomes a trough and vice versa.

This is effectively the same thing that noise-cancelling headphones do: generating the inverse of incoming sound so that the two cancel out.

?Start Quote

Everybody is consuming more and more bandwidth... we need to solve some of the fundamental problems to sustain the capacity growth?

End Quote Xiang Liu Bell Laboratories

Ideas exist to make use of phase conjugation to "undo" the noise that fibre links add, but they involve adding devices midway along the links' length - sometimes, in the middle of an ocean floor.

"Sometimes you may send data from London to New York, sometimes you may send it from London to Paris. The links are changing and you cannot keep sending people to the middle of the link," said lead author on the new research Xiang Liu of Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, US.

What Dr Liu and colleagues instead suggest is creating a pair of phase-conjugate beams, each carrying the same data.

And as Dr Liu explained to BBC News, the noise that each gathers is equally a mirror image of that on the other.

"At the receiver, if you superimpose the two waves, then all the distortions will magically cancel each other out, so you obtain the original signal back," he said.

"This concept, looking back, is quite easy to understand, but surprisingly, nobody did this before."

If the noise on the beams can be undone, the power can be ramped up - making data go literally further.

But since fidelity can be maintained, there can be less of the repetition of information in a given beam that is used for error correction. So the phase conjugation method is also a way to get higher data speeds.

"Nowadays everybody is consuming more and more bandwidth - demanding more and more communication," Dr Liu said.

"We need to solve some of the fundamental problems to sustain the capacity growth."

Excellent Advice To Follow When Traveling Anywhere

Traveling is something that most people will undertake, at least once. No matter what your traveling experience is, you can still benefit from other people's experiences. This article is designed to provide you with valuable information regarding travel and how to get the most out of it.

When traveling abroad, be on the lookout for criminals who may be posing as law or government officials. Don't give anyone your original passport; you will probably never see it again. If someone demands that you go to an office, walk. In order to stay safe, never ride in a car with someone you don't know.

Even when on long flights, never assume the airline will provide everything you need. A flight is often more comfortable when you bring along comfort items; such as a blanket, a pillow or your own set of headphones. You should also bring enough snacks to get you to your destination and not have to rely on airport food.

Before getting off the cruise in a port city find yourself a hotel with free parking. Be sure to ask about parking deals in case they are not published.

These products are overpriced and the space saved is not worth it. Use techniques such as rolling your clothing or make use of vacuum packaging. This will help you in your quest to get some more space in your bags.

Deserts offer remarkable and memorable vistas and exotic plant and animal life. Everyone should experience the majesty and austerity of the desert at some point in their life.

Documentation is key, so be sure to discover what kinds of visas you will need to enter any countries you will be traveling to. Visas often have a lengthy processing time so you should apply for them as soon an you are thinking of travel. It is important to know that some countries could deny you entry without the proper visa.

Wear simple slip-on shoes for flying. Security staff at checkpoints will ask you to remove them. The most important thing is comfort. Most of the time during air travel is spent sitting, not walking, so you don't need a lot of foot support. The best shoes for flying might well be sandals or flip-flops.

When you travel try your best to educate your family as much as you can along the way. Exposing your children to the experiences of developing countries can be very rewarding as long as you take safety precautions and travel wisely. When you spend time abroad, you give yourself and your family a greater understanding of another culture and the world at large.

When you go on a trip, be sure to put your contact information on an easily noticed spot inside your luggage. This way, even if your luggage gets lost and external tags are detached, your luggage may still find you. It's a simple precaution that could save your luggage.

As was said before, planning your trip might not seem as fun as going on a trip. There are a few different tips you can use to have a chance at a better trip. If you want to have a great time on your trip, then follow the tips in this article.

'Fast & Furious' leads 'Hangover' in big-budget movie battle

By Lisa Richwine and Chris Michaud

(Reuters) - The speed demons of "Fast & Furious 6" raced ahead of the hard-partying "Hangover" gang in a battle between two male-oriented movie franchises, setting up the car chase sequel for a big holiday weekend win at U.S. and Canadian box offices.

"Fast & Furious 6" rang up an estimated $98.5 million in domestic ticket sales from Friday through Sunday and was speeding toward $122.5 million by the end of Monday's U.S. Memorial Day holiday, distributor Universal Pictures projected.

Comedy sequel "The Hangover Part III" brought in $42.4 million from Friday through Sunday, according to studio estimates, and was likely to finish with $64 million through Monday, after a Thursday opening.

Last weekend's box office leader, sci-fi sequel "Star Trek Into Darkness," fell to third place with $38 million through Sunday and was headed toward $48 million through Monday.

The movies charged up the North American box office, putting ticket sales on pace for a Memorial Day weekend record. Receipts for all films could reach $323 million through Monday, according to Hollywood.com, shattering the 2011 record of $276.3 million.

"A perfect storm of hits led to this incredible weekend with going out to the movies proving itself to be the first choice for outside-of-the-home entertainment," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Hollywood.com's box office division.

The sixth installment of "Fast & Furious" blew past pre-weekend forecasts for $80 million in domestic sales over four days by nearly 50 percent. The five previous films grossed $1.6 billion combined.

Set in London, the new film stars Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto, a now-retired professional criminal who reunites his crew with U.S. Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs, played by Dwayne Johnson. The group works to take down a criminal outfit of mercenary drivers scattered across 12 countries.

The new movie built a massive online fan base with more than 34 million "likes" on Facebook. It cost $160 million to produce.

"To do this again, and have critics rave which is so unusual for this type of film ... that's unbelievable," said Nikki Rocco, president for domestic distribution at Universal Studios, a unit of Comcast Corp.

"And it's really extraordinary that 49 percent of the audience is female. Older females really love the film," she noted, adding that its appeal is "very broad and very diverse."

"Fast & Furious 6" added $177 million in international markets, bringing global sales through Sunday to $275.5 million, Universal said.

With the franchise showing no signs of slowing, Universal has already announced the "Fast & Furious 7" release for July 2014.

EXTENDED HANGOVER?

"The Hangover Part III," meanwhile, brings the hard-partying saga to a close. The third movie takes friends played by Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis back to Las Vegas for a new round of escapades as they hunt for the elusive and eccentric Mr. Chow, played by Ken Jeong.

The third installment looked likely to miss forecasts for sales of at least $70 million including Thursday sales of $11.8 million. Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment produced "Hangover Part III" for $103 million, according to the Box Office Mojo website.

Dan Fellman, president of theatrical distribution for Warner Bros, said that while the film "underperformed just a little bit," the big weekend numbers all around were a good sign, and "Hangover III" was the second-largest opening ever for an R-rated film with $64 million projected through Monday.

"The market expanded enormously this weekend," Fellman noted, "so we expect we'll be getting some of the 'Fast & Furious' fans in the next week."

The weekend's other new nationwide release, animated family film "Epic," landed in fourth place with $34.2 million through Sunday and an estimated $44 million through Monday.

"Epic," released by News Corp's 20th Century Fox studio, tells the story of a teenage girl who discovers a battle between good and evil taking place deep in the forest. Colin Farrell, Josh Hutcherson and Beyonce provide voices for the characters. The 3D movie, which cost $93 million to produce, is the first new family film to reach theaters since "The Croods" debuted on March 22.

Third-place film "Star Trek Into Darkness" dropped 46 percent from its debut a week earlier. Global sales through Sunday neared $260 million, according to distributor Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom Inc.

In fifth place, blockbuster superhero movie "Iron Man 3" from Walt Disney Co's Marvel Studios earned $19.4 million through Sunday. Its cumulative global sales topped $1.1 billion, Disney said, the fifth-highest total of all time.

Irish likely to turn to Rees with Golson suspended

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? Tommy Rees has been Notre Dame's go-to guy when the Fighting Irish get in a jam. And they're certainly in one now.

Rees will likely become the quarterback Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly turns to now that Everett Golson is out for 2013.

Golson disclosed Sunday that he has been suspended by Notre Dame for at least the fall semester for what he said the university called poor academic judgment.

"I take full responsibility for my poor choices and will do all that is asked of me to regain the trust of my family, friends, teammates, coaches and the entire Notre Dame community," he wrote.

Rees, who was suspended for the 2012 season opener after pleading guilty to misdemeanor resisting law enforcement and illegal consumption of alcohol by a minor, is expected to start under center this fall.

Kelly turned to then-freshman Rees to start the final four games of 2010 when Dayne Crist went down with a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. Rees also stepped in when Crist was benched after halftime in Notre Dame's ugly season-opening 23-20 loss to South Florida in 2011, and he was repeatedly called on last season when Golson struggled or was injured.

Rees rallied the Irish to three victories and took every snap in a win over BYU when Golson was injured, although he struggled in that game.

The question is whether Rees can be the starting quarterback on an elite team. He is 403-of-634 passing for 4,413 yards in 33 games, including 18 starts. He has thrown 34 touchdown passes and 24 interceptions but is a slow runner, rushing the ball only 47 times for a loss of 71 yards.

Not exactly the ideal candidate for Kelly's spread offense.

The other choices are Andrew Hendrix, a better runner than Rees who has been repeatedly been beaten out by him, and early enrollee Malik Zaire. After frequently talking last season about how tough it was using a first-year starter who already had a year in the system, it doesn't appear likely Kelly will want to turn to a true freshman as the Irish seek to prove they can back up last season's unbeaten regular season with another strong showing.

The Irish find themselves in this bind because of the sudden departure of Golson, who the Irish were counting on to lead the offense with his arm and his legs. Golson helped the Irish regain the No. 1 ranking for the first time in nearly two decades and get to the national title game against Alabama in January.

Golson was officially no longer enrolled at Notre Dame as of Friday, university spokesman Dennis Brown said Saturday night. While the player did not specify what he did to get suspended, he wrote that he understands his integrity could be in question.

"But I want to reassure my supporters that through this experience I will return a better student athlete as well as a better individual," said Golson, who did not respond to telephone or text messages left by The Associated Press.

He said he chose to attend Notre Dame because of its mission to develop him both on and off the field.

"My parents and the community I grew up in have instilled values in me that have and will continue to allow me to be successful in the future. There have been many lessons learned as I worked to become the starting quarterback at Notre Dame and each was a result of Coach Kelly's belief in me as an athlete and a person," he wrote.

He also thanked the university for the opportunity it already has given him and the opportunity to retain his eligibility in January.

"Lastly, I want to thank the University of Notre Dame for the opportunity already granted and also the opportunity going forth to regain my eligibility in the winter of 2014."

The immediate problem for Notre Dame, though, is the fall of 2013.

(AP) ? A highway overpass in southeast Missouri collapsed early Saturday when rail cars slammed into one of the bridge's pillars after a cargo train collision, authorities said. Seven people were injured, though none seriously.

The bridge collapsed after a Union Pacific train hit the side of a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train at a rail intersection. Derailed rail cars then hit columns supporting the Highway M overpass, causing it to buckle and partially collapse.

The National Transportation Safety Board launched an investigation into the cause of the cargo train collision, which happened about 2:30 a.m. near Chaffee, a town of about 3,000 southwest of Cape Girardeau.

Only two vehicles were on the overpass at the time. Five people in the vehicles were taken to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, as were a Union Pacific train conductor and an engineer. All seven had been released by Saturday afternoon, hospital spokeswoman Felecia Blanton said.

"You're driving down the road and the next thing you know the bridge is not there. ... It could have been really bad," Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter said.

The crash derailed about two dozen rail cars hauling scrap metal, automobiles and auto parts, tossing them into the overpass' support columns. The highway was shut down for about 8 miles from Scott City to Chaffee.

The overpass was about 15 years old and in good condition but just couldn't withstand the impact from the rail cars, Walter said.

Two 40-foot sections of the overpass buckled while two cars were on the roadway, sending the cars into the edges of the collapsed sections. A diesel fire also broke out in one of the locomotives after the collision, but was quickly extinguished, Walter said.

When Blanton heard about the crash, she immediately went online and saw video footage of the scene and was bracing for the worst, Blanton said. She said it was "a real blessing" that the injuries were relatively minor, the most serious being a fracture.

"If you look at the pictures, they're very dramatic, and there are no serious injuries," she said. "So it's amazing."

Walter said Deputy Justin Wooten was among the first at the scene and pulled the two Union Pacific employees out of the wrecked engine, which became lodged next to the train's second engine. That engine began burning after the crash.

"We're very fortunate he was there," Walter said. He said all seven people injured were already out of the wreckage when he arrived about 15 minutes after the crash was reported.

"People were talking; they were coherent. They understood what was happening," Walter said.

The cars on the overpass "took a really bad hit" when they collided with the bridge sections, but "they stayed on all four tires and they just hit and landed and that was it," he said.

The accident came more than a week after a commuter train derailment in Connecticut that injured 70 people and disrupted service for days. That accident involved a railroad used by tens of thousands of commuters north of New York City.

In Washington state this past week, a bridge collapsed when a truck driver's load bumped against the steel framework.

NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt said while the investigations into both collapses are in the early stages "there is no similarity" between the Missouri accident and the bridge collapse in Washington, which sent two vehicles and three people falling into the chilly water.

He noted that the Missouri bridge was rated "good" after it was last inspected in February.

"This was not because of any lack of integrity of the bridge in southeast Missouri, but because of a train that derailed and had a bunch of rail cars slamming around, which knocked down a pier, which allowed the bridge to collapse," he said.

"If you just look at the facts, there is no relationship other than some external object caused each of these bridges" to collapse, he added.

The Union Pacific train involved in the collision was carrying primarily automobiles or auto parts from Illinois to Texas, said UP spokeswoman Calli Hite. She said about a dozen UP railcars derailed.

Hite said there was no estimate yet on the amount of damage to the roadway or the rail cars.

BNSF spokesman Andy Williams said about 12 cars on the 75-car BNSF train derailed. The BNSF crew was not hurt.

Sumwalt said NTSB investigation will include routine testing of railroad employees for drugs and alcohol, testing the track and nearby rail signals and reviewing video footage from the front of the train in an effort to determine the likely cause. The NTSB will also review the bridge's design.

(AP) ? The woman hired to clean up Rutgers' scandal-scarred athletic program quit as Tennessee's women's volleyball coach 16 years ago after her players submitted a letter complaining she ruled through humiliation, fear and emotional abuse, The Star-Ledger reported Saturday night on its website.

"The mental cruelty that we as a team have suffered is unbearable," the players wrote about Julie Hermann, hired May 15 as Rutgers' athletic director after serving as the No. 2 athletic administrator at Louisville.

In the letter submitted by all 15 team members, the players said Hermann called them "whores, alcoholics and learning disabled" and they wrote: "It has been unanimously decided that this is an irreconcilable issue." The players told The Star-Ledger that Hermann absorbed the words and said: "I choose not to coach you guys."

The 49-year-old Hermann, set to take over the Rutgers' program June 17, told The Star-Ledger she didn't remember the letter. The newspaper said when it was read to her by phone Wednesday, she replied, "Wow."

Hermann, the first woman to head Rutgers' athletic program and one of three female ADs at the 124 schools that make up college football's top tier, has promised a restart for the program following the ouster of its men's basketball coach and the resignation of other officials.

She is set to replace Tim Pernetti, who quit last month after the firing of basketball coach Mike Rice. Practice videos surfaced of Rice shoving and throwing basketballs at players and yelling gay slurs at them.

"No one on the coaching staff doesn't believe that we need to be an open book, that we will no longer have any practice, anywhere at any time, that anybody couldn't walk into and be pleased about what's going on in that environment. It is a new day. It is already fixed," Hermann said at her introductory news conference.

At that news conference, Hermann was questioned about a 1997 jury verdict that awarded $150,000 to a former Tennessee assistant coach who said Hermann fired her because she became pregnant.

Rutgers' problems started in December when Rice was suspended three games and fined $75,000 by the school after a video of his conduct at practices was given to Pernetti by Eric Murdock, a former assistant coach. The video showed numerous clips of Rice firing basketballs at players, hitting them in the back, legs, feet and shoulders. It also showed him grabbing players by their jerseys and yanking them around the court. Rice can also be heard yelling obscenities and using anti-gay slurs.

The controversy went public in April when ESPN aired the videos and Rutgers President Robert Barchi admitted he didn't view the video in the fall. Rice was fired and Pernetti, assistant coach Jimmy Martelli and interim senior vice president and university counsel John Wolf resigned.

After a series of interviews with many of the former Tennessee players about Hermann, The Star-Ledger said:

"Their accounts depict a coach who thought nothing of demeaning them, who would ridicule and laugh at them over their weight and their performances, sometimes forcing players to do 100 sideline push-ups during games, who punished them after losses by making them wear their workout clothes inside out in public or not allowing them to shower or eat, and who pitted them against one another, cutting down particular players with the whole team watching, and through gossip.

"Several women said playing for Hermann had driven them into depression and counseling, and that her conduct had sullied the experience of playing Division I volleyball."

The Star-Ledger asked Hermann about the players' lingering grievances.

"I never heard any of this, never name-calling them or anything like that whatsoever," she told the newspaper. "None of this is familiar to me."

Rutgers will join the Big Ten in 2014.

Rate of bicycle-related fatalities significantly lower in states with helmet laws

Rate of bicycle-related fatalities significantly lower in states with helmet laws

Friday, May 24, 2013

Existing research shows that bicyclists who wear helmets have an 88 percent lower risk of brain injury, but researchers at Boston Children's Hospital found that simply having bicycle helmet laws in place showed a 20 percent decrease in deaths and injuries for children younger than 16 who were in bicycle-motor vehicle collisions.

The cross-sectional study, conducted by William P. Meehan III, MD, Lois K. Lee, MD, MPH, Rebekah C. Mannix, MD, MPH of Boston Children's Hospital, and Christopher M. Fischer, MD, of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, was published in the Journal of Pediatrics, and suggests that having these laws may influence parents to require their children wear helmets.

"Past research shows that laws can be an important factor in helping parents adhere to best practice guidelines," says Meehan. "For parents who feel like there is conflicting information related to child health, this evidence supports the fact that helmets save lives and that helmet laws play a role."

On average, 900 people die annually in bicycle-motor vehicle collisions?three quarters die from head injuries. At the start of the 12-year study (1999 to 2010), 16 states had bike helmet laws, and 35 did not. The researchers identified all relevant fatalities, totaling 1612, in states with and without bike helmet laws.

After adjusting for factors previously associated with rates of motor vehicle fatalities (elderly driver licensure laws, legal blood alcohol limit and household income) the adjusted fatality rate was still significantly lower in states with helmet laws.

To conduct the retrospective study, researchers analyzed data obtained from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS)?a census, compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which included information from all 50 states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Since the FARS database is limited to injuries sustained during a motor vehicle collision that resulted in the death of at least one person within 30 days of the collision, the findings are likely an understatement of how important helmet laws are. "As a result of the data only capturing deaths, rather than all injuries, our findings likely underestimate the effects of the mandatory helmet laws, because we did not capture all pediatric bicycle-related injuries," says Mannix.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that all cyclists wear helmets that fit properly for each ride, and supports legislation that requires all cyclists to wear helmets.

4 Trends That Are Converting Business Owners from Saying ...

couple in officeWhen a business owner says, ?I don?t need to get found on the internet? or ?Clients do not look for my business?on?the internet,??it tells me a few things about their business.??First, the business owner has probably owned their business for a long time, and?built it by networking, developing referral sources, making introductions?and perhaps buying or inheriting a reputable business.? Congratulations, as this is not easy to do.??I attend a lot of networking events and I know how difficult it is to build trusted relationships and a reputation that stands out from the crowd.? However, the saying, ?It?s not just what you know, it?s who you know,? has been updated for today?s business environment (more on this below).

Second, the business owner is probably using traditional marketing tools to attract and retain clients (i.e. advertisements, direct mail campaigns,?press releases, brochures and yellow pages, etc.).? These are all great marketing tools and if they?are driving new opportunities to your business then?by all means keep them up.??However, if they are not successfully attracting new clients, building?your company?s brand awareness, or establishing you as a leader in key markets then?you need to fix them (or hire someone with the expertise who can).

Third, their website is probably 5 ? 10 years old and it has not been updated for several years.? Business owners who apply a fraction of the?time and money they spend on?traditional marketing tools?to enhance their website?s presence on the internet will achieve impressive and?measurable results.

These are some of the issues that my colleagues and I will be addressing at the New Economy Boot Camp on June 18th in Cambridge, MA.? In the interim, here are four trends that are converting business owners?from saying, ?Customers don?t look for us online,? to ?We need to get found online!?

?

4 Trends That ?Are Converting Businesses from saying:

?Customers don?t look for us online,? to ?We need to get found online!?

?

1) Digital marketing?is?changing the way that consumers and companies are doing business.

In the past, customers used phonebooks and directories to locate companies and they asked friends and advisers for recommendations before making a significant purchase or investment.? Customer buying behavior has changed.?Today, more and more consumers and companies are using digital marketing tools?(ex. mobile applications, social media, videos and search engines, etc.) to help them find what they want to buy, when they want to buy it.

2) From a marketing perspective, the focus has changed?from companies looking for customers who might like to buy, to customers finding companies when they are ready to buy.

The saying, ?It?s not just what you know, it?s who you know,??has been updated.? Today?s business owners need to focus on, ?What do I want to be known for, and where do I want to be found??? For example, you might want to be known for ?estate planning for single parents with teenagers? and be found by families in?Massachusetts and Rhode Island.?? Or, you might want to be known for ?developing portable fuel cells? and be found by companies in the transportation industry.? In general, the better you are at describing what you want to be known for, the more likely customers will find you (vs. your competitors) in the markets where you want to be found.

3) Last month, there were over 20 billion searches on Google alone (Bing and?Yahoo are other popular search engines)

As a business owner, your clients might not be searching the internet for your products or services today,?but the next generation of customers, business owners, buyers and?leaders is?already there.? As I mentioned earlier, more and more consumers and companies are using the internet to find what they want to buy, when they want to buy it.? So, if your business does not have a strong internet presence then it is not likely to be found by Google or other major search engines.? For example, most people who search the internet will only look at the first page of their search results.? If your business appears on page 3 or 4, then the likelihood that customers will find you is greatly diminished.? Further, you risk being perceived as less effective, capable and successful than businesses that appear on page one (even if you are better than your competitors!).

4) There is no silver bullet for getting found on the internet.

Sometimes business owners can have false expectations about what the internet can and cannot do for their business.? For example, just because you create a video it doesn?t mean that it is going to go viral.? Or, just because you optimize your website, it doesn?t mean that you are going to appear on page one of? Google next month.? The fact is,?Google?is constantly changing its algorithms for getting found on the internet, digital marketing tools are continuously being updated and introduced to the market, and one-hit- wonders?on YouTube?make it difficult for business owners to discern myth from reality and maintain industry best practices.

Promoting your business on the internet takes time and it requires a strategy if you want to be successful.? If want to get on board with digital marketing (or at least kick the tires) then please join me and my colleagues?on June 18th at the New Economy Boot Camp on: ?Mobile, Social Media, Video & Search: Myths and Best Practices for Growing Your Business.?

Friday Fun Fact: The First Movie On TV Was In Theaters At The Time

Only about half a dozen people in the Los Angeles area owned a TV in 1933. But those handful of early adopting TV geeks were in for a special treat on March 10th of that year when the movie The Crooked Circle was broadcast in its entirety.

That day the campy detective flick became the first feature film ever broadcast on TV when experimental Los Angeles station W6XAO-TV beamed it out from the corner of 7th and Bixel Streets in downtown. The really surprising part? It was still playing in local theaters at the time.

In the early 1930s, TV was the promise of the future. It may have been an experimental toy to many, but a select few saw its potential as a revolutionary new medium. This new medium was hungry for content, and one place to draw from was the movie business.

Astonishingly to those of us here in the year 2013, the movie production company that put out The Crooked Circle (the short-lived Sono-Art World Wide Pictures) heartily encouraged the broadcast. From their perspective, it was great advertising. And creating a little buzz in a community of early adopters during the Great Depression ? a time when movies were a popular and affordable form of escapism ? couldn't hurt.

In the early 1930s you couldn't pop on down to the shop and buy a TV set. They were pretty much the exclusive domain of tinkerers, radio professionals and hobbyists. But it's amazing to think what that must have felt like to receive a picture ? a motion picture! ? through the air and into your home while the movie was still playing at the theater just down the street.

Today, movie studios and TV stations alike are battling for eyeballs as the amount of video content available over broadcast and the internet is seemingly endless. But today, just as it was at the dawn of television, it seems the experimenters are the ones most likely to thrive.

You can watch The Crooked Circle in its entirety over at the Internet Archive.

Jury foreman says life or death decision unfair

PHOENIX (AP) ? They were 12 ordinary citizens who didn't oppose the death penalty. But unlike spectators outside the courthouse who followed the case like a daytime soap opera and jumped to demand Jodi Arias' execution, the jurors faced a decision that was wrenching and real, with implications that could haunt them forever.

In an interview Friday, jury foreman William Zervakos provided a glimpse into the private deliberations, describing four women and eight men who struggled with the question: How heinous of a killing deserves a similar fate?

"The system we think is flawed in that sense because this was not a case of a Jeffrey Dahmer or Charles Manson," Zervakos told The Associated Press.

"It was a brutal no-win situation. ... I think that's kind of unfair," the 69-year-old added. "We're not lawyers. We can't interpret the law. We're mere mortals. And I will tell you I've never felt more mere as a mortal than I felt for the last five months."

Zervakos said the most difficult time of the entire trial was hearing directly from victim Travis Alexander's family as his brother and sister tearfully explained how his killing has shattered their lives.

"There was no sound in that jury room for a long time after that because you hurt so bad for these people," he said. "But that wasn't evidence. That's what made it so hard. ... This wasn't about them. This was a decision whether we're going to tell somebody they were going to be put to death or spend the rest of their life in prison."

Zervakos described a deliberations room full of tears and spinning moral compasses as each juror struggled to come to grips with their own beliefs about what factors ? including Arias' young age at the time of the killing and her lack of criminal history ? should cause them to show mercy and spare her life.

"You've got Travis Alexander's family devastated, that he was killed, that he was brutally killed. You've got Jodi Arias' family sitting in there, both families sitting and seeing these humiliating images and listening to unbelievably lurid private details of their lives, and you've got a woman whose life is over, too," Zervakos said. "I mean, who's winning in this situation? And we were stuck in the middle."

Zervakos declined to discuss his thoughts or those of other jurors on whether Arias should have been sentenced to death or life. But he said he was torn between her two personas: a killer and an average young woman struggling through life.

"You heard (prosecutor Juan) Martinez say she was only 27. ... She's old enough that she should have known better," Zervakos said. "I didn't look at it that way. I'm looking at 27 years of an absolutely normal everyday young woman that was living a life that was perfectly normal. Then something changed the trajectory of her life after meeting Travis Alexander, and it spiraled downhill from there."

The same jury on May 8 convicted Arias of first-degree murder in Alexander's killing, but couldn't reach a decision Thursday after about 13 hours of deliberations on whether she should live or die.

Judge Sherry Stephens was forced to declare a mistrial of the penalty phase and dismissed the panel.

A conference with the judge and attorneys is set for June 20 to determine how both sides want to proceed. In the interim, Stephens set a July 18 retrial date.

The mistrial set the stage for a whole new proceeding to determine whether the 32-year-old former waitress should get a life sentence or the death penalty for murdering Alexander five years ago.

Arias stabbed and slashed him nearly 30 times, slit his throat slit and shot him in the forehead. Prosecutors said she attacked Alexander in a jealous rage after he wanted to end their relationship and planned a trip to Mexico with another woman. Arias contends it was self-defense.

Prosecutors now have the option to take the death penalty off the table and avoid a new penalty phase. The judge would then determine whether to sentence Arias to spend her entire life behind bars, or give her life with the possibility of release after 25 years. Given Arias could not afford her own defense, taxpayers footed the bill for court-appointed attorneys at a cost so far of nearly $1.7 million, a price tag that will only balloon if the case moves forward.

Should the state decide to seek death again, jury selection alone could take months, given the difficulty of seating an impartial panel in a case that has attracted global attention and become daily cable TV and tabloid fodder with tales of sex, lies and violence, said jury consultant Jo-Ellan Dimitrius.

"Will it be impossible? No. Will it be tough? Absolutely," she said.

Dimitrius noted that jury selection in the widely publicized trial of infamous serial killer Richard Ramirez, known as the "Night Stalker," who is on death row in California, took six months as attorneys weeded through more than 2,000 prospective jurors.

If Arias faces a new penalty phase, her murder conviction would stand, leaving the new panel tasked only with sentencing her. However, the proceedings could drag on for several more months as the new jury reviews evidence and witness testimony.

If the second jury cannot reach a unanimous decision, the judge would then sentence Arias to one of the life-in-prison options. The judge cannot sentence Arias to death.

Asia stock markets edge up after big sell-off

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets staged a mild recovery Friday, a day after being routed by unexpectedly weak Chinese manufacturing and fears the Federal Reserve will start withdrawing its monetary stimulus.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index, which plummeted more than 7 percent Thursday, bounced back a sizeable 2.8 percent to 14,892.57. South Korea's Kospi gained 0.1 percent to 1,971.46. Benchmarks in Indonesia, Taiwan and mainland China also rose.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng spent the morning bobbing between slight gains and slight losses before falling nearly 0.1 percent to 22,656.15. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 tumbled 1.4 percent to 4,992.80. Benchmarks in the Philippines and New Zealand also fell.

The Nikkei's dramatic fall Thursday was attributed on the spike in the interest rate on the country's benchmark 10-year bond to above 1 percent for the first time in a year, which came after Fed meeting minutes showed some of its policy makers want the U.S. central bank to start scaling back its monetary stimulus.

The swing in Japanese bonds unnerved investors at a time when Japan's already overburdened government finances are vulnerable to rises in interest rates. The interest rate, or yield, later slipped back to about 0.9 percent.

The sell-off is a reminder of Japan's vulnerability as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe tries to end two decades of stagnation with unprecedented monetary easing, increased government spending and reforms to make the world's No. 3 economy more competitive.

Mixed messages from the Federal Reserve about when it might start scaling back its bond-buying program also stirred investor anxiety.

The Fed is buying $85 billion worth of bonds every month as part of its stimulus program. That has kept interest rates low and encouraged investors to put money into stocks and other risky assets. If the Fed slows down its bond purchases, investors fear it could lead to an outpouring of money from stocks.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was down 4 cents to $94.20 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 3 cents to close at $94.25 per barrel on the Nymex on Thursday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.2920 from $1.2932 late Thursday in New York. The dollar strengthened to 102.23 yen from 101.91 yen.

Ecuador satellite space crash fears

The Ecuadorean space agency (EXA) is trying to pick up signals from its satellite after it crashed in space into debris from an old rocket.

The nano-satellite, called Pegasus, was launched from the Jiuquan spaceport in China less than a month ago.

It is Ecuador's first and only satellite in orbit.

Experts said Pegasus had collided with debris from a Soviet rocket but was still in orbit. It is not yet clear if it has been damaged.

Analysis

The eyes of many Ecuadoreans were raised to the sky on Thursday, waiting for news of Pegaso, Ecuador's only satellite.

The country's first and only astronaut, Ronnie Nader, who is also Space Operations Director of the Ecuadorean Space Agency, kept the country informed through Twitter, where many shared their sense of pride.

"If Pegaso dies it doesn't matter because Ecuador reached the universe," wrote one user.

"Many criticise Pegaso but at least Correa is the first president that has bet on science and invested in it," said @cristifreire.

One singer, known as AU-D, who had recorded a song dedicated to the nano-satellite after its launch last month, said he had converted his living room into a satellite monitoring station. "Let's go Pegaso!" he wrote on Twitter, referring to Pegaso as brave.

But others ridiculed the event and created the tag #cadenadeoracionporPegaso (chain of prayer for Pegaso).

A parody Twitter account, @Satelite_Pegaso, said: "Irresponsible, those who send me into space without a defence team."

The US-based Joint Space Operations Center, which monitors all artificial Earth-orbiting objects, said there had been no direct crash but that their "data indicated a lateral collision with particles" of the Soviet rocket.

EXA chief Ronnie Nader tweeted that Pegasus remained in orbit. "Ecuador still has its satellite, the people still have Pegasus," he announced.

"Pegasus could be damaged or spinning out of control, but because it's still in orbit, we have hope," he wrote.

He had said earlier that it could take up to 48 hours to ascertain possible damage using radar.

Debris threat

Pegasus, a small cube weighing just 1.2kg (2.6lb), has been orbiting the Earth at a height of 650km (404 miles), transmitting pictures from space while playing recordings of the Ecuadorean national anthem.

On Wednesday, the Joint Space Operations Center notified EXA of a possible collision between Pegasus and the fuel tank of an S14 Soviet rocket over the Indian Ocean, some 1,500km east of Madagascar.

Mr Nader said the satellite was insured.

The Ecuadorean government contributed $700,000 (?465,000) to its launch on board an unmanned rocket.

Ecuador is planning to launch a second satellite, named Kryasor, from Russia in August.

The Joint Space Operations Center tracks more than 22,000 objects orbiting Earth, of which 87% are debris and inactive satellites.

CTIA Day 3 Liveblog: Ashton Kutcher live at 12:30 p.m. EDT

Ashton Kutcher

We're live from the third day of CTIA in Las Vegas. And at this morning's keynote address we're gearing up for a chat with actor Ashton Kutcher, who also happens to be a bit of a technology nerd as well as the latest portrayer of Steve Jobs in a movie that might or might not see the light of day later this year. (Initial screenings didn't go so well, apparently.)

So, strap in and join the liveblog after the break. Kelso's up at 9:30 a.m. PDT, 12:30 p.m. EDT.
