Japan's ANA buys 4 Boeing jets worth $1.1B

Japan's All Nippon Airways said it will buy three Boeing 777 jetliners and a 767 freighter, and reaffirmed its faith in the aerospace company's 787 Dreamliner, Reuters reported Tuesday. The order is worth $1.1 billion at list prices.

ANA said there's no change in its 787 Dreamliner orders. "The 787 is an aircraft that overall has had few problems," Kiyoshi Tonomoto, an executive vice president at ANA, said during an earnings briefing, according to Reuters.

Those problems include a July 12 fire aboard an Ethiopian Airlines 787 in London; the focus in that incident has shifted to the emergency locator transmitters. The entire 787 flight was grounded earlier this year due to uncontrolled combustion of two lithium-ion batteries in two separate aircraft.

The 777 is manufactured in Everett, and local and state officials have been trying to persuade Boeing to build the next version of the 777, the 777X, in their city.

Republican Florida governor (not Charlie Crist) commends an Obama proposal as other GOPers jeer

He didn?t bestow a Charley Crist-style man hug, but Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott voiced approval today for an economic proposal by President Barack Obama that drew jeers from other Republicans.

Speaking today in Chattanooga, Tenn., Obama proposed cutting corporate income tax rates in exchange for more government spending on jobs programs, an idea the White House promoted as a ?grand bargain? with the GOP.

Scott did not comment on the overall bargain, but gave a thumbs-up to the idea of cutting corporate taxes and suggested Obama got the idea from Scott?s playbook.

?When President Obama visited Jacksonville last week, we urged him to follow our lead in Florida and cut corporate taxes to help our country?s manufacturing industry. Today, we welcome his support of cutting the corporate income tax rate less than a week after his visit to our state. In Florida, we have eliminated business taxes for 70 percent of businesses and we recently eliminated sales taxes on manufacturing equipment,? said a statement from Scott this afternoon.

House Speaker John Boehner and other Republicans were quick to denounce Obama?s proposal, noting that the president has voiced support in the past for lowering corporate rates as part of a larger tax reform package that would include an overhaul of individual rates and deductions. The GOP argues that Obama isn?t conceding any new ground while asking Republicans to move off their opposition to new spending.

A Boehner spokesman complained earlier in the day that the speaker learned of Obama?s idea from news accounts rather than the White House; the White House said it tried to brief Boehner?s staff Monday but phone calls were not returned.

The White House played up Scott?s statement this afternoon. Deputy White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest alluded to the grousing by Boehner and others while mentioning Scott on his Twitter account.

?Not every GOPer dismisses an idea just bc he/she read it on the wire first. Heck, @FLGovScott says he ?welcomes? it,? Earnest tweeted.

Egypt violence: Morsi supporters march on army intelligence headquarters

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Cairo, where violence between Egyptian security forces and supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi resulted in dozens of deaths. Egyptians are bracing themselves for more rallies today.

By Yasmine Saleh and Matt Robinson, Reuters

CAIRO -- Supporters of Egypt's ousted Islamist president marched toward a military facility in defiance of an army warning in the early hours of Monday, risking a new confrontation after dozens were shot dead at the weekend.

The Muslim Brotherhood said the destination was the military intelligence headquarters, despite an army statement warning protesters to steer clear of military installations.

A Reuters reporter saw several thousand marchers leaving the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque in northern Cairo, where they have been staging a weeks-long vigil to demand the reinstatement of deposed Mohammed Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president.

At least 72 Brotherhood supporters were shot dead by security forces on Saturday near the vigil, deepening the turmoil convulsing the country since the army shunted Morsi from power on July 3.

/

Deadly protests continue weeks after the nation's military removed the president from office.

The killings at dawn - following a day of rival mass rallies - fueled global anxiety that the Arab world's most populous nation could descend into a broader conflagration.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, was due to meet on Monday in Cairo with the army's General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who led the overthrow of Morsi, and officials of the Freedom and Justice Party, the Brotherhood's political wing.

The marchers carried pictures of the deposed president, flashing victory signs and chanting, "Our blood and souls we sacrifice for Morsi."

The military intelligence building is several miles from the site of the vigil, where thousands of protesters are defying threats by Egypt's army-installed authorities to clear them.

The army, saying it was aware of the planned march, issued a statement urging protesters "not to come close to military facilities in general, and the headquarters of military intelligence specifically."

Sisi, who was appointed by Morsi only to turn against him after a year into the president's rule, made his first appearance on Sunday since the killings, smiling before television cameras at a graduation ceremony for police recruits dressed in starched white uniforms.

He received a standing ovation and was hailed by Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim as "Egypt's devoted son."

Fawning coverage in state and private media reflected Sisi's rising political star, in a country ruled by former military officers for six decades before a 2011 popular uprising toppled veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

Ashton, in a statement, said that during her visit she would press for a "fully inclusive transition process, taking in all political groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood."

The military says it does not want to retain power and aims to hand over to full civilian rule with a "road map" to parliamentary elections in about six months.

But the very public role of Sisi as face of the new order has sown doubt in the army's intentions, and the Brotherhood says it wants nothing to do with his road map.

Morsi has been in army detention since he was ousted, and the military-backed interim government has placed him under investigation on charges that include murder.

Speaking to Reuters on Sunday, interim Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy said deepening divisions would lead to "more tragedies." He blamed the Brotherhood for the violence, but said they should be part of the country's political future.

"If they decide to withdraw from politics, it will be disappointing. If they decide to pursue violence, then you are looking at a completely different confrontation," Fahmy said.

"Even if I personally reject their positions or ideology, they have to find their place in Egypt's political life."

Japan's top diplomat heads for China, seeking better ties

By Linda Sieg

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki will visit China on Monday and Tuesday for talks with senior officials, the latest in a series of efforts by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to improve relations soured by a bitter territorial row.

The hawkish Abe, who cemented his grip on power in an upper house election last week, has since then been signaling a desire for dialogue - even though Japan has raised its assessment of the risk of China's military buildup and maritime assertiveness.

On Friday, Abe called for an unconditional meeting between Japanese and Chinese leaders - a proposal he repeated on Monday, according to Kyodo news agency. It said Abe had instructed diplomats to work towards that goal.

On Sunday, Isao Iijima, an adviser to the premier, told reporters that Abe could soon hold a summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, but Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said no schedule had been set.

"As Prime Minister Abe has repeatedly said, he wants a mutually beneficial, strategic relationship and the door is always open for dialogue.

"However, there is no immediate schedule for a leadership summit," Suga told a news conference on Monday.

Often fragile Sino-Japanese ties have been seriously strained since September, when a territorial row over tiny islands in the East China Sea flared following Japan's nationalization of the uninhabited isles.

Concern that Abe, who came to power in December, wants to recast Japan's wartime history with a less apologetic tone has added to the tension.

"Vice Minister Saiki will visit China on July 29-30 and exchange views with Chinese officials," a Japanese foreign ministry spokesman said. He did not give further details.

China's Foreign Ministry responded to Abe's overture on Friday by saying its door was always open for talks but that the problem lay in Japan's attitude.

Japan should "stop using empty slogans about so-called dialogue to gloss over disagreements", the ministry said in a statement faxed to Reuters.

REPEAT SUCCESS?

Abe, 58, may be hoping to repeat one of the few successes of his troubled 2006-2007 term in office, when he thawed ties with China that had frayed during the five-year stint of his predecessor, Junichiro Koizumi. One opportunity for the Japanese leader to meet his Chinese counterpart could be a Sept 5-6 Group of 20 leaders' summit in St. Petersburg, Russia.

"It's not a breakthrough yet, but we are hopefully making some progress," said Kunihiko Miyake, a former diplomat close to Abe who is now research director at the Canon Institute for Global Studies in Tokyo. "It is not unilateral solicitation (by Japan). It is a mutual sort of approach without losing face. That's why it takes time."

Experts say the key sticking point to a Sino-Japanese summit is whether the two sides can find a way to set aside the row to calm the situation and focus on other aspects of relations between the world's second- and third-biggest economies.

China wants Japan to first acknowledge that a formal dispute exists, a step that Tokyo has rejected for fear it would undermine its claim to sovereignty of the isles, known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China, the experts said.

Tensions rose last year after Japan nationalized the islands and Chinese and Japanese ships and aircraft have been playing a cat-and-mouse game nearby, raising worries about an accidental clash that could escalate. On Monday, Japan's coast guard said four Chinese vessels were sighted in nearby waters, although not in an area Japan considers its territory.

The United States has affirmed that the islands are included in its commitment under a U.S.-Japan security treaty, but has repeatedly made clear it would like to see tensions abate.

Whether China's Xi, who faces huge challenges in dealing with corruption and slower-than-expected growth, has the bandwidth to improve ties with Tokyo is as yet unclear, especially given the negative view of Japan among many Chinese.

Beijing may also be waiting to see how Abe handles the touchy topic of wartime history, given the still bitter memories in China of Japan's past aggression.

Japan's Mainichi newspaper said last week Abe was unlikely to visit Yasukuni Shrine on August 15, the emotive anniversary of Japan's defeat in World War Two. The shrine is seen by critics as a symbol of Tokyo's past militarism because leaders convicted by an Allied tribunal as war criminals are honored there along with war dead.

Pope draws 3M to Mass as Brazil trip closes

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? Pope Francis' historic trip to his home continent ended Sunday after a marathon weeklong visit to Brazil that drew millions of people onto the sands of Rio de Janeiro's iconic Copacabana beach and appeared to reinvigorate the clergy and faithful alike in the world's largest Catholic country.

Dignitaries including Brazilian Vice President Michel Temer turned out at Rio's Antonio Carlos Jobim international airport to bid farewell to the Argentine-born pontiff after a visit marked by big moments. They included a visit to a vast church dedicated to Brazil's patron saint, a rainy walk through one of Rio's dangerous slums and a papal Mass that was one of the biggest in recent history.

Speaking from a white stage on the sands of Copacabana on Sunday, Francis urged a crowd estimated at 3 million people to go out and spread their faith "to the fringes of society, even to those who seem farthest away, most indifferent."

"The church needs you, your enthusiasm, your creativity and the joy that is so characteristic of you!" he said to applause in his final homily of World Youth Day festivities.

Later Sunday, he issued a more pointed message to the region's bishops, telling them to better look out for their flocks and put an end to the "clerical" culture that places priests on pedestals ? often with what Francis called the "sinful complicity" of lay Catholics who hold the clergy in such high esteem.

Despite a series of organizational snafus, including a subway breakdown Wednesday that stranded hundreds of thousands of people for hours, Francis' visit was widely hailed as a success by the Vatican, pilgrims and everyday Brazilians alike. His nonstop agenda was followed live on television for all seven days, his good nature and modesty charming a country has seen the phenomenal rise of Protestant and evangelical Pentecostal churches in the past decades.

"You came to see the young people but you ended up enchanting all Brazilians," Temer said on the tarmac of Rio's main airport minutes before the pope's takeoff. He added that the country's door would be permanently open to the pontiff and called on him to "just enter without knocking, because there will always be a place for Your Holiness in Brazilians' hearts."

Nearly the entire 4-kilometer-long (2.5 mile) Copacabana beach overflowed Sunday with flag-waving faithful, some of them taking an early morning dip in the Atlantic and others tossing T-shirts, flags and soccer jerseys into the pontiff's open-sided car as he drove by.

Even the normally stern-faced Vatican bodyguards let smiles slip as they jogged alongside Francis' car, caught up in the enthusiasm of the crowd.

The numbers clearly overwhelmed the area's services: The stench of garbage and human waste hung in Rio's humid air, and the beach and adjoining chic Atlantic Avenue looked like an improvised refugee camp plunked down in the middle of one of the world's most beautiful cities. Copacabana's famous mosaic sidewalks were strewn with trampled cardboard, plastic bags, empty water bottles and cookie wrappers as trash collectors in orange uniforms tried to restore order.

"You'd think they could at least put their garbage in all the bins," said Jose da Silva, a 75-year-old retired farm worker who supplements his meager income by collecting empty cans for recycling. "I'm also pretty surprised that people who call themselves Christians would throw away all this food."

Many of the youngsters on hand for the Mass spent the night on the beach, joining an all-night slumber party to end the Catholic youth fest, with pilgrims wrapped in flags and sleeping bags to ward off the cold.

"We were dying of cold but it was worth it," said Lucrecia Grillera, an 18-year-old from Cordoba, Argentina, where Francis lived for a time before becoming pope. "It was a tiring day, but it was a great experience."

The Vatican said more than 3 million people were on hand for the Mass, based on information from World Youth Day organizers and local authorities who estimated two-thirds were from outside Rio. That was far higher than the 1 million at the last World Youth Day in Madrid in 2011 or the 850,000 at Toronto's 2002 concluding Mass.

Only Pope John Paul II's Mass during his 1995 visit to Manila, the capital of the Philippines, topped Rio's numbers, with an estimated 5 million people taking part. Third place among papal Masses now goes to Rome's World Youth Day in the 2000 Jubilee year, when 2 million people participated. A similar number attended John Paul's final Mass in Krakow, his Polish hometown, in 1979, during his first visit to his homeland as pope.

As if recalling that historic Mass, Francis announced Sunday that the next World Youth Day would be held in Krakow in 2016.

The presidents of Brazil, Francis' native Argentina, Bolivia and Suriname were on hand for the Mass, as were the vice presidents of Uruguay and Panama. Receiving a special honor was a couple Francis met on Saturday after Mass at Rio's cathedral; they had brought him their anencephalic baby daughter to be blessed. Francis invited them to participate in the offertory procession Sunday, at which the father wore a T-shirt that read "Stop abortion."

Later, the pope thanked some of the 60,000 volunteers who organized the youth festival before flying to Rome. He called on the thousands of young people packed into a vast hall to "be revolutionaries" and "swim against the tide."

Francis spent much of the week emphasizing that core message: of the need for Catholics, lay and religious, to shake up the status quo, get out of their stuffy sacristies and reach the faithful on the margins of society or risk losing them to rival churches.

According to census data, the number of Catholics in Brazil dipped from 125 million in 2000 to 123 million in 2010, with the church's share of the total population dropping from 74 percent to 65 percent. During the same time period, the number of evangelical Protestants and Pentecostals jumped from 26 million to 42 million, increasing from 15 percent to 22 percent of the population.

While speaking to the young volunteers, Francis urged those thinking of dedicating their lives to the church to follow the urge, recalling the day he felt the calling.

"I will never forget that day, 21 September ? I was 17 years old ? when, after stopping in the Church of San Jose de Floresto to go to confession, I first heard God calling me," he said. "Do not be afraid of what God asks of you! It is worth saying 'yes' to God. In him we find joy."

The masses of pilgrims appeared thrilled, although the week got off to a rocky start, with a mob descending on the papal motorcade as it made its way into the city upon Francis' arrival last Monday.

"It was such an excellent week, everybody was in such good spirit, you could just feel a sense of peace," said Denise da Silva, a Rio de Janeiro Catholic who was sitting alone on the beach Sunday morning, a Brazilian flag painted on her face. "I have never seen something here in Rio so marvelous as what we have just lived."

The Rev. Jean-Luc Zadroga, a Benedictine monk who led a group of 14 students from a Catholic university in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, said it was clear Francis had connected with the crowd, particularly the locals.

"He's really trying to reach out to Catholics who have fallen away from the church or disappointed with the church, and I think it's working," Zadroga said.

Ahead of Obama visit, Amazon says it will hire thousands

Amazon.com Inc unveiled a new hiring spree on Monday ahead of a visit by President Barack Obama to one of the Internet retailer's giant distribution warehouses this week.

Amazon said it is looking to fill more than 5,000 new full-time jobs at 17 of its fulfillment centers across the United States. That's roughly a 25 percent increase in full-time fulfillment center staff, which currently number more than 20,000 in the country.

Amazon has been building lots of new fulfillment centers closer to customers in recent years as the company tries to speed up delivery of online orders and reduce shipping costs.

Amazon needs a lot of workers to pick, pack and ship orders alongside high tech robots that whiz around its warehouses. The company's demand for employees is so strong that it has created special programs to woo candidates.

Last year, Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos used the front page of the company's website to announce a Career Choice program that pays thousands of dollars for warehouse employees to take technical and vocational courses in high-demand areas including engineering, information technology, transportation and accounting.

Amazon made its latest hiring push as President Obama is due to visit a company fulfillment center in Chattanooga, Tennessee on Tuesday to speak about jobs in the United States.

The President will discuss proposals to jumpstart private sector job growth and make America more competitive, according to a White House spokeswoman.

Ethanol akin to asbestos in cancer stakes

Kiwis slowly sobering up to cancer risk

CHARLEY MANN Drinking

ENJOYABLE: Alcohol is a popular social lubricant but heavy drinking is linked to cancer.

Have you made efforts to reduce your drinking?

New Zealand's excessive drinking culture is causing cancers with abysmally low survival rates, oncology experts say.

The Cancer Society of New Zealand says Kiwis are only now sobering up to the link between alcohol and cancer, just as we did more than 30 years ago with smoking and lung cancer.

Strong links between drinking more than two or three units a day have been established to deadly digestive tract cancers including mouth, throat, larynx and oesophageal cancers.

There are also strong links between alcohol and bowel, breast and prostate cancers.

The warning comes as some Kiwis sign up for Dry July, a month without drinking alcohol. Those taking part are encouraged to sign up sponsors in support of cancer services.

Health Ministry statistics show in the decade to 2009, a total of 2719 New Zealanders were diagnosed with oesophageal cancer.

Just 435 survived - a survival rate of around 16 per cent.

The oesophagus, the tube connecting the throat to the stomach, is so close to vital organs that cancer spreads quickly.

Dr Jan Pearson, of the Cancer Society, said it was time Kiwis started talking about the risks of excessive drinking.

"We are probably at the stage now that we were at 30 years ago with tobacco," she said.

She said lung cancer still caused a high number of deaths with a 20-year time lag from when NZ still had high smoking rates.

Otago University public health professor Tony Blakely said alcohol "absolutely" contributed to cancer rates.

"Alcohol has more obvious impacts on injuries, deaths, social bedlam, unwanted pregnancies and suicides," he said.

"It's ubiquitous in our culture."

Excessive drinking significantly increased the risk of developing cancer, he said, alongside genetics and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Christchurch Professor Doug Sellman, of the National Addiction Centre, said that 25 per cent of alcohol-related deaths "are actually cancer deaths.

"The ethanol in alcohol is a group one carcinogen, like asbestos," he said.

The Health Promotion Agency says between 600 and 1000 deaths a year were attributed to alcohol.

It advises you can reduce long-term health risks by drinking no more than:

Women

? Two standard drinks a day and no more than 10 standard drinks a week

Men

? Three standard drinks a day and no more than 15 standard drinks a week

? Have at least two alcohol-free days every week.

? One standard drink is equivalent to one glass of wine or one 330ml bottle of beer.
