He didn?t bestow a Charley Crist-style man hug, but Republican Florida Gov. Rick Scott voiced approval today for an economic proposal by President Barack Obama that drew jeers from other Republicans.
Speaking today in Chattanooga, Tenn., Obama proposed cutting corporate income tax rates in exchange for more government spending on jobs programs, an idea the White House promoted as a ?grand bargain? with the GOP.
Scott did not comment on the overall bargain, but gave a thumbs-up to the idea of cutting corporate taxes and suggested Obama got the idea from Scott?s playbook.
?When President Obama visited Jacksonville last week, we urged him to follow our lead in Florida and cut corporate taxes to help our country?s manufacturing industry. Today, we welcome his support of cutting the corporate income tax rate less than a week after his visit to our state. In Florida, we have eliminated business taxes for 70 percent of businesses and we recently eliminated sales taxes on manufacturing equipment,? said a statement from Scott this afternoon.
House Speaker John Boehner and other Republicans were quick to denounce Obama?s proposal, noting that the president has voiced support in the past for lowering corporate rates as part of a larger tax reform package that would include an overhaul of individual rates and deductions. The GOP argues that Obama isn?t conceding any new ground while asking Republicans to move off their opposition to new spending.
A Boehner spokesman complained earlier in the day that the speaker learned of Obama?s idea from news accounts rather than the White House; the White House said it tried to brief Boehner?s staff Monday but phone calls were not returned.
The White House played up Scott?s statement this afternoon. Deputy White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest alluded to the grousing by Boehner and others while mentioning Scott on his Twitter account.
?Not every GOPer dismisses an idea just bc he/she read it on the wire first. Heck, @FLGovScott says he ?welcomes? it,? Earnest tweeted.
