Texas Longhorns Junior DT Brandon Moore declares for NFL Draft

Manny Diaz will need to replace a key DT rotational cog next year.

In case you missed it from the weekend, Texas Longhorns defensive tackle Brandon Moore, a first-year junior, has declared for the NFL Draft. Moore joined the Longhorns last season after spending a year at East Mississippi Community College. Prior to that, Moore spent two years with the Alabama Crimson Tide, redshirting his first year. At Texas, Moore played in 11 games, starting 4. His overall stat line included 18 tackles, 8 TFLs, and 2 sacks.

Per a statement released by MB-TF:

"I want to thank Coach (Mack) Brown, Coach (Bo) Davis and everyone at Texas," Moore said. "I enjoyed my time and really appreciate the opportunity I had to play for the Longhorns, but my lifelong dream has been to play in the NFL and to have a chance to support my family. I'll definitely miss everyone at Texas and will always pull for the Longhorns, but I'm ready to put all of my energy into preparing for my future and getting ready to work out for NFL scouts."

The news was somewhat surprising, given that Moore did not have a gigantic impact in his junior year at Texas, and has not received much NFL Draft buzz. Moore was expected to return to Texas and play a major role in the Longhorns' defensive tackle rotation.

Even without Moore, the Longhorns have a healthy rotation at defensive tackle. Texas returns rising junior Desmond Jackson and rising sophomore Malcom Brown, the two likely starters going into spring ball. Rising seniors Ashton Dorsey and Chris Whaley provide quality depth, and three freshmen currently redshirting, Alex Norman, Paul Boyette, and Hassan Ridgeway, will also fight for playing time.

From a recruiting perspective, the Longhorns currently have a commitment from Top 100 player A'Shawn Robinson (Fort Worth Arlington Heights). Robinson is currently considering Alabama and USC, though he remains committed to Texas. The Longhorns are also considered the clubhouse leader for 3* Andrew Billings (Waco), who will likely start his collegiate career at defensive tackle.
